Those who had got the opportunity to set up a small shop of 28 square feet on one side of the city’s bus passenger sheds in exchange of rent and maintaining the area, have now grabbed the entire space by setting up 3 to 4 shops illegally.
According to sources, the Dhaka South City Corporation gets only tk 100 as rent for a shop but the occupants are allegedly collecting Tk 30 to Tk 50 thousand from tenants at Shahabagh area in the name of rent.
Urban planners, however, demanded to determine the rent of the shops by verifying the current market price. And the mayor is talking about taking action against the occupants.
According to the statement of 1990, the Dhaka City Corporation allowed a small shop of about 28 square feet on one side of the passenger’s shed in 30 places in the capital city on condition that the passenger’s waiting for transport will be maintained by them.
The agreement stipulated that the store operators would keep the place suitable for passengers as well as they will protect it from encroachment by others.
But in the course of time, the keeper now becomes the eater.
Many of the city’s passenger camps have been partially or completely occupied by a section of people.
Several passengers complained that though the shops were allocated marking a limited area, it gets bigger after a certain period.
As a result, this creates very difficulties for the passengers who wait for buses especially during the rainy season.
It is learned that there are three shops near the gate number 3 of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University in city’s Shahbag.
According to a shopkeeper, a person named Akbar generally takes the shop rent taka 30,000 per month from them.
On the other hand, according to the agreement, the city corporation is getting only taka 100 per month as rent for a shop.
Urban expert and city planner Adil Muhammad Khan said that since the tenure of contract expired five years ago, the rent of all the shops under the City Corporations has to be re-determined by verifying the current market price.
Warning the occupants of the passenger sheds, DSCC Mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh said, “What kind of agreement have we got with them seeing that, action will be taken against culprits.
