S.A Shofiee, Sylhet :The mild cold wave continues to sweep the country’s Sylhet district affecting normal life and causing miseries to the common people for the third consecutive day on Sunday.Though the minimum temperature marked little fall during the past 24 hours ending Saterday afternoon, the overall situation slightly improved yesterday following disappearance of very thick layers of fogs that made the sun invisible in the last two days.Official and local sources said that fewer people went out their homes on Saterday afternoon. The public places, hats, bazaars, bus stands and other places looked deserted in the evening due to extreme cold. The day labourers could hardly work in the fields to earn livelihoods amid biting cold due to dense fogs, clouds and mists in the air forcing the sun to remain invisible yesterday.Reports from remote areas said, biting cold coupled with cooler winds made life miserable for Sylhet districts. The district administrations, NGOs, public and private bodies, banks, voluntary and charitable organisations, business and professional bodies have further distributed warm clothes among the cold-hit people.Sylhet Divisional Health officials said, adequate steps have been taken in all government hospitals and upazila health complexes to provide proper treatment to the increasing number of cold- related patients.Meanwhile, the normal life in Sylhet city and its adjacent areas is also being affected due to the continuous cold weather coupled with chilly wind and dense fog for the last few days. The sufferings of daily wage earners like day labourers, rickshaw pullers, traffic police and farm labourers have also been mounted during the morning and evening hours. The number of patients suffering from Pneumonia, Asthma and respiratory complications increased in the upazila and district level hospitals, including Sylhet M.A.G Osmani Medical College Hospital, with rise in intensity of cold biting, the hospital sources said.
