Staff Reporter :
The mild cold wave continues to sweep the country’s northern districts affecting normal life and causing miseries to the common people for the third consecutive day on Friday.
Though the minimum temperature marked little fall during the past 24 hours ending Friday afternoon, the overall situation slightly improved yesterday following disappearance of very thick layers of fogs that made the sun invisible in the last two days.
Official and local sources said that fewer people went
out their homes on Friday afternoon. The public places, hats, bazaars, bus stands and other places looked deserted in the evening due to extreme cold.
The day labourers could hardly work in the fields to earn livelihoods amid biting cold due to dense fogs, clouds and mists in the air forcing the sun to remain invisible yesterday.
Reports from remote areas said, biting cold coupled with cooler winds made life miserable for over 15 lakhs people living in over 200 char villages in Rangpur, Kurigram, Nilphamari, Gaibandha, Lalmonirhat, Jamalpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
According to the Met Office sources, the minimum temperature of 13 degrees Celsius was recorded at 6 am yesterday against Thursday’s minimum 13.5 degrees Celsius in Rangpur city.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers Abdus Salam of Rangpur and Abdul Motaleb of Nilphamari said, distribution of warm clothes has been intensified further among the cold-affected people in Rangpur continues.
A total of 7,200 and 4,151 pieces of blankets have so far been distributed among the cold-hit people in Rangpur and Nilphamari districts respectively, they said.
The district administrations, NGOs, public and private bodies, banks, voluntary and charitable organisations, business and professional bodies have further distributed warm clothes among the cold-hit people.
Rangpur Divisional Health officials said, adequate steps have been taken in all government hospitals and upazila health complexes to provide proper treatment to the increasing number of cold- related patients.
Meanwhile, the normal life in Rajshahi city and its adjacent areas is also being affected due to the continuous cold weather coupled with chilly wind and dense fog for the last few days.
The sufferings of daily wage earners like day labourers, rickshaw pullers, traffic police and farm labourers have also been mounted during the morning and evening hours.
The overall cold-wave situation deteriorated in the region with the lowering of mercury level coupled with reducing gap between minimum and maximum temperature during the past 24 hours.
Local Met Office recorded the season’s lowest temperature of 10.1 degrees Celsius against the highest of 22.6 degrees Celsius in Rajshahi yesterdday while on Thursday’s minimum temperature was recorded 11.1 degrees against the highest 17.4 degrees.
Sources said the temperatures marked further fall due to decrease in humidity and blowing of Himalayan winds from the north and northwestern directions.
Mounting Cold spell with mild chilly wind and heavy fog has triggered cold- related diseases.
The number of patients suffering from Pneumonia, Asthma and respiratory complications increased in the upazila and district level hospitals, including Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, with rise in intensity of cold biting, the hospital sources said.
