Thousands of children dominated the Amar Ekushey Boi Mela on Saturday (yesterday), the 14th day of Mela, as it was the last day of Shishu Prohor (Children Hours)
The children mostly between eight and 15 flocked to the Boi Mela with their parents and relatives. They were also seen in long queues at every entry points of the Boi Mela. They had no complaint but eagerness to buy their favourite books.
In fact, they enjoyed a very cheerful time from 11am to 2pm by giving a quick glance on the new books and buying some of them.
Sanjida Akhter, an eight-year-old child, came to the Boi Mela with her father. She bought eight storybooks including a book named ‘Muktijuddher Kishore Upannyas Somogro’ written by Shiru Bangali. Sanjida is very happy buying the books.
Amzad Hossain, a guardian from Mirpur, told The New Nation that he fulfilled his 11-year-old son’s desire of purchasing 10 children books from the Mela. He thanked the Bangla Academy authorities for their decision to keep some hours for the children.
To encourage the children, a quiz and instant speech competition was also held in the main podium of the Bangla Academy where Vice-Chancellor of National University Professor Harun-or-Rashid was present as the chief guest.
Deputy Director of Bangla Academy Murshiduddin Anwar moderated the function while Khairul Alam Sobuj, Professor Abu Mohammad Delwar Hossain and Shahida Khatun were the judges of the competitions.
Earlier on February 6, the Bangla Academy authorities announced ‘Children Hours’, so that the children can buy books without any hazard and in absence of adult buyers.
Meanwhile, a crowed situation was also prevailed at the Boi Mela as yesterday was the Valentine’s Day. Several hundred of pairs came to the mela and bought books to give their dear and near ones.
Sania Sanju, a student of North South University, said that she bought three books and gave those to her beloved. She also said that it was a great moment for her when she was giving gift (books) to her boy friend!
Meanwhile, one hundred and forty seven new books arrived and 12 books were unveiled on Saturday.
Of the new books, 29 are storybooks, 36 novels, three essay books, 36 poems, two on research, five children literature, three on biography, one on Liberation War, three on drama, four on travel, one on Science, one on history, four on health, one on religion, two on translation and 16 on other subjects.
The new books arriving at the Boi Mela on Saturday were: Kishor Probondho Samogro by Sujon Barua, Chotoder Golpa-1 and 2 by Biprodash Barua, Muktijoddher Kishor Upannyas Samogro by Shiru Bangali, Chora Samogro-1 by Naser Mahmud, Sajghorer Satkahon by Labonya Lipi, Goenda Kahini by Rokib Hasan, Meghoboti Mon Amar by Rokhsana Rafique, Tumi Isparsha Hoe Namo by Jamil Sultan, Ekmutho Swapna by Abu Jafar, Story of A girl Scammer by Soram Moni, Bodhe o Bedonay Mir Taki Mir by Bidhan Riberu, Jibon Jemon by Nargis Alamgir, Bristri Tomake Dilam by Tanmina Chowdhury, Jekhane 71 er Surjodoy by M Anisur Rahman, Allahke Je Pete Chay by Lutfannesa Aziz, Jibonder Black Magic by Sufi Banglar Pantha, Sagar Konya Nyasaland by Dr Mohammad Ali Khan and Moner Maje Bashonta Je Tar by Mahbuba Mukul.
A discussion on “National Professor Sarder Fazlul Karim” was held in the main podium of the Bangla Academ in the afternoon.
Professor Emeritus Sirajul Islam Chowdhury presided over the function while Rayhan Rain presented a keynote paper. Professor Shahidul Islam and Professor Zia Rahman joined the discussion. A fascinating cultural programme was held in the evening.
The discussion on “National Professor Salahuddin Ahmed” will be held in the main podium of the Bangla Academ today (Sunday).
Professor Mahmud Shah Quraishi will preside over the function while Dr Dr Firoz Mahmud will present a keynote paper. Shamsul Hossain, Md Zahidur Rahman, Nishat Jahan Rana and Mrittika Shahita will take part the discussion.
