Dhaka Shishu (Children) Hospital authorities allegedly failed to purchase emergency corona treatment equipment after the government’s allotment of Tk 6 crore and 2 lakh for this.
Sources said, a corona unit has been established in the hospital on July13.
Since its establishment the corona unit, there were shortages of necessary and emergency equipment including high flow nasal cannula, X-ray machine, Ultrasonogram, and others.
For these purposes, the hospital authority applied to Health and Family Welfare Ministry to allot Tk 6 crore.
As a quick response, the ministry has allotted
Tk 6 crore and 2 lakh to the hospital. According to the ministry, of the six crore and two lakh taka, one crore taka for buildings and installations, 50 thousand taka for computer and other equipment, one crore 50 lakh taka for office stationary and assistance and for others (hotel, rest house rent, transport rent, food, utility bills, cleaning etc.) Tk. 5 lakh has been given.
But the hospital authority failed to purchase those emergency equipment five months after they have gotten the money. The hospital authorities have been spending the allotted money as per their whims, officials of the hospital accused on condition of anonymity.
They alleged that the ignorance of a section of higher officials is the reason behind the failure of equipment procurement.
The high officials of the hospital are trading blame game against each other on this regard.
It is learnt that the authority is now spending the money to pay wages and other allowances of physicians, nurses and other staffs.
As a procedures after getting allotment letter from the ministry, the authority have to forge a committee for price assessments. The committee gets three days for assessing prices. After submitting the price list to the hospital director, he has to invite tender within seven days. The authority has to complete evaluations of tenders within seven days and the work order to be given within next seven days.
The hospital authority however, demanded that they have purchased several equipment like X-ray machine from its own fund. When contacted Professor Dr. Shafi Ahmed, Director of the hospital said they have to bear burdens of huge expenditures including paying wages of doctors, nurses and other employees.
Why not they buy Air conditioner using the government allotted special fund and why not they purchase any equipment for rending treatment assistance to the Covid patients children? The director refrained from answering.
On the other hand, several physicians of the hospital said that some equipment have been managed but not purchased with the government allotted fund.
They alleged misuse of the fund by some identified officials as the administration is not strict enough.
