Shah Alam Nur :
Healthcare facilities in the state-run Dhaka Shishu Hospital is gradually going out of the reach of patients mainly due to multifarious problems like reluctance of the doctors in providing medication, corruption and politicization.
This specialized hospital for children in the capital city is also running with shortage of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) as there are only 14 seats under the unit which could not cope with the increasing demand of the patients.
Abul Asad of Gazipur said his two days old baby needs treatment at the hospital’s ICU but the hospital authority could not provide a seat there.
Due to the shortage of seats at ICU his son is taking treatment at Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of the same hospital. But there has not been any improvement in his son’s condition, he said.
Abdur Rahman of Pabna said his six months old son has been facing several problems but could not get proper treatment from the hospital.
He said the hospital doesn’t provide any medicine. So, he has to buy medicine from the outdoor.
An official of the hospital said, “We are in big trouble. We are passing the most difficult time in the history of Dhaka Shishu Hospital.”
He said the hospital could not provide proper treatment to the patients as the hospital is beset with various problems such as corruption and politicization of doctors.
He said to fulfill the demand of the patients, the hospital needs more than 50 seats at ICU but there are only 14 seats. As a result, everyday many patients are being forced to go to private hospitals.
He said despite there being a rule that the board of management must sit at least once a month; there had not been any such meeting for long time.
Source said, there are two conflicting groups of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad, the ruling party-backed doctors’ association, at the hospital.
He said the conflict between the director of the hospital and the leaders of the hospital unit of Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad has virtually divided the hospital into two poles.
The supporters of the two conflicting groups have set up their own rules and are working on their whims, jeopardizing the activities of the largest healthcare facility for children in the country.
President of the Swadhinata Chikitsak Pariahad of the hospital Dr Abu Tayob has been allegedly involved in illegally recruiting and promoting doctors, secretly doing business with the contractors and unlawfully building shops on the hospital premises and renting them out.
The Dhaka Shishu Hospital was established in June 1977. Around 700 patients come to the 560-bed hospital from different parts of the country every day for treatment.
