Shirin Sharmin elected CPA Chairperson

BSS, Dhaka :Speaker of Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has been elected chairperson of the executive committee of Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA). She was elected the CPA chairperson for the next three years in the CPA elections held in the Cameroonian capital of Yaounde yesterday, a Parliament Secretariat press release said here.Dr Shirin Sharmin defeated Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Cayman Islands Juliana O’Connor Connoly, the release said, adding there were 321 voters from 175 parliaments of 53 Commonwealth countries.Bangladesh has been a member of the CPA, the biggest parliamentary forum of the world, since 1973. It competed for the post of CPA chairperson for the first time this year.Geographically, the CPA has been divided into different regions. They are Africa, Australia, British Islands and Mediterranean, Canada, Caribbean, Americas and Atlantic, India, Pacific and South-East Asia. Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad has been included in CPA Asia region, the release added.
