Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan MP on Sunday visited Barisal River Port to see the preparations for embarking and disembarking facilities for water transport and passengers and asked concerned departments to ensure safety and security of the passengers and vessels during Eid vacation.
He said, thousands of people of southern region uses waters ways and water transports for visiting their dearest and nearest ones during Eid vacations. So district administration, law enforcing agencies and shipping ministry officials asked to take sufficient preparations for prevention of any fatal accident and ensure safety and security of the vessels and passengers during embarkations and disembarkations.
The minister hoped for reduction of marine accidents and causalities to Zero in current year, said during the previous government of 4-party alliance, number of marine accidents were yearly highest 31 and lowest 20. However present government reduced that to 16 and 2.
Close circuit cameras already installed at the ports and vessels and gradually would be installed at concerned offices to prevent sabotages, he told.
However like crews and staffs of the vessels, passengers would also be aware to avoid riding abroad over loaded vessels for preventing any accident, he added.
Shipping minister further informed that World Bank has sanctioned low-interest rated loans of Tk 3,200 core for dredging, maintaining navigability of river ways, developing and modernising river ports.
Already dredging of river ways from Chittagong to Ashuganj started and more development and modernisation projects would also be taken soon as the funds would be provided.
Dr. Gazi Md. Saifuzzaman, Deputy Commissioner, Barisal, officials of law enforcing agencies, BIWTC and BIWTA, were also present during the visit of the minister at Barisal river port.
