The Anti-Corruption Commission on Thursday caught Chief Engineer of Department of Shipping SM Nazmul Haque red-handed at the time of taking bribe.
An ACC team led by its Director Nasim Anwar arrested Nazmul from a restaurant in the capital’s Segunbagicha area when he was taking Tk 5 lakh as bribe from a shipping company, said ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharjee.
He said that Nazmul demanded Tk 15 lakh from M/s Syed Shipping for giving no objection certificate and approving design of its vessel MV Prince of Sohag.
Later, the business firm sought ACC’s help in this regard and the ACC organised the trap to catch the bribe seeker, he said.
The Commission Assistant Director Abdul Wadud filed a case with Ramna Police in this regard.
Earlier on July 19 in 2017, the ACC caught the then Department of Shipping Chief Engineer AKM Fakhrul Islam red-handed from his Motijheel office.
ACC team arrested Fakhrul while taking the bribe from Badrul Alam, an employee of Bengal Marine Engineer Services.
