Shifting of factories from Barisal residential areas demanded

Immediate shifting of chemical and pharmaceutical factories from densely populated residential areas of the city and compensations for the affected people demanded in Barisal by the citizens.
A human chain was formed on these issues on Thursday in the city center.
Five factories including three factories of Opsonin group, one of Rephco and one of Chemist Laboratories situated at densely populated residential areas of Bagura Road, Mathuranath School Road and College Row in the city.
On March 30, one labour killed and four others severely injured after fire broken out on 3rd, 4th and 5th floors in one factory building of Opsonin Pharmaceutical at Bogura Road area of the city.
Shawkat Hasan, deputy director at Barisal station of Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, said the steal and brick structure of that building weakened in more that 4 hours of fire fighting operations to extinguish the flame. This created severe risk for the factory structures.
Explosions of chemicals used for pharmaceutical factory and collapsing of such kind of structure at any time may endanger factory building and surrounding areas with thickly residential premises, Dr. Mizanur Rahman, member-secretary Barisal Nagorik Samaj said.
Sukumar Biswas, director, environment directorate office in Barisal said owners of those five factories given notices seven times in last five years to shift their factories from the densely populated city areas.
Every time the authourities of the factories begging time promised to shift their industries within a short time, but yet not do that.
In last prayer on December 2014, authorities of Opsonin group promised to shift their factories within December 2015, the DoE director told.
