A Cox’s Bazar court on Monday morning granted bail to Shahedul Islam Shifat, who was present when retired Major Sinha was shot, in two cases filed with Teknaf Police Station.
The court of Teknaf Upazila Senior Judicial Magistrate Tamannah Farah passed the order around 11:15am, reports our Cox’s Bazar correspondent quoting Shifat’s lawyer Mohammad Mostafa.
“The court also granted the appeal of changing the investigation officer of both the cases filed against my client,” the senior advocate said adding that now the two cases against Shifat will be investigated by Rapid Action Battalion instead of police.
Sub-inspector Nandadulal Rakshit of Teknaf Police Station had filed two cases against Shifat under narcotics control act and for obstructing officers from discharging government duties on August 1.
Shifat is an eye-witness of Major (retd) Sinha killing. He had been in police custody since the incident on July 31. The next day he was arrested in the two cases.
The plaintiff of the cases, Nandadulal Rakshit is an accused in Sinha murder case and is currently in jail.
Stamford students Shifat, Shipra and Tahsin Rifat Noor were in Cox’s Bazar to shoot a travel video for Sinha’s YouTube channel named “Just Go”. They were staying at Nilima Resort in Himchari area on Marine Drive Road.
After the incident, police handed Rifat to his parents’ custody and Shipra was granted bail on Sunday.
