World Heart Day: Shield the heart before it attacks you

Prof. Dr. Gobinda Chnadra Das :
This year, the World Heart Day ihas been observed on Sept 29 in Bangladesh along with other parts of the world. The World Heart Federation organizes the day as an international campaign to inform people about cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which are the biggest cause of death. The day promotes preventive measures to reduce the risk of CVDs.
Started first in 1999, the day is held on the last Sunday of September every year.
According to the Heart Federation, at least 80 percent of premature deaths from heart disease and stroke could be avoided if the main risk factors-which are tobacco, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity-are controlled.
The theme of the day this year has been selected as ‘My Heart, Your Heart’. This year, the theme stresses on building a global community of Heart Heroes.
Those who are well, and have working capacity, whose heart has no problem, and they are committed to maintain their own and others’ heart well will be included into the Heart Heroes of the community. There is an important question relating to it that what steps we have taken at the moment to protect heart of mine and others.
Specially stressing on our promises, the day reminds us to perform our duties for keeping our heart well. We need to take steps for avoiding things (such as smoking and taking excess rich foods) which may spoil our heart. We need to take steps as to whether we are giving our promises to relatives regarding avoiding those things.
The Day reminds us to give five promises. These are: promise for family such as healthy cooking and foods; promise for children such as motivating them for exercise and avoiding smoking; promise for health workers such as they should disseminate messages for decreasing cholesterol among people and shunning smoking; promises for policy makers such as they should fix policies for keeping our heart well; promise for employers (they should create such an environment conducive to heart-friendly).
Things such as mental stress, aggression of emotion, excess work pressure and pressure of life create risk for heart disease. Increased aspirations of human being, tendency to quickness in works and various tensions in modern life directly hamper blood circulation in cardiovascular system. If heart is compared with horse, mind can be termed as its rider.
If mind works for increasing speed in life race, then naturally pressure falls on mind and its impact must fall on heart. Today human being is running in competition with time. Hence, they are forced to suffer more, resulting in cardiovascular disease. Such disease may snatch away people’s life without giving any prior signal.
Food is needed for maintaining our life. Similarly, treatment is also required when people fall sick for keeping us well.
There are two types of treatment system such as bypass and stenting, which are mainly used for treatment of cardiovascular diseases. But these are very expensive and risky. Patients may be cured but they have to depend on intake of huge medicine and live with different physical inabilities
After that, there is risk of being attacked by disease again. Cardiovascular disease has been termed as one of the killer diseases in the world. About 1.75 crore people die of this disease in the world every year.
On the other hand, three diseases (malaria, HIV-AIDS and Tuberculosis) account for the death of 38 lakh people every year across the world. The three diseases are identified as dangerous disease in the world.
On the other hand, there is absence of necessary campaign regarding serious risk posed by cardiovascular disease. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides us an opportunity of launching awareness campaign on this matter on the World Hearth Day in the world.
Experienced physicians put emphasis on prevention and control of cardiovascular disease. Hence, the family is considered as important. Guardians particularly women can play an important role in this regard. Refraining children from smoking, motivating children to physical activities and advising children to take healthy foods by avoiding foods (fatty and artificial foods), which increase health risk. Regular exercise reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.
It has been observed that risk to cardiovascular disease is reduced to a large extent if body weight and blood pressure is kept under control. Half of the country’s total population is women. So it would be like suicidal if women are not involved in movement and activities aimed at protecting our heart. Our whole life system has to be changed if we want to survive from cardiovascular disease, a silent killer. We have to do certain things to achieve healthy heart. The main focus of this year’s Heart Day is relevant for us in Bangladesh.
The Heart Day is observed in Bangladesh along with 194 countries of the world. We think that observance of the day would be successful when comparatively financially disadvantaged people will be brought under prevention and cure of cardiovascular disease.
Hence, the United Nations declared June 21 as the World Yoga Day recognizing it as alternative system of treatment for maintaining healthy life. So we should keep in mind about alternative system of treatment for cardiovascular disease.
This alternative treatment is called holistic system of treatment.
Holistic system of treatment, which is combination of modern technology and ancient natural system, is regarded as an alternative system of treatment of cardiovascular disease. There are two key points under the holistic system—one is taking healthy foods and the other is exercise. Intake of regular foods depends on the patient’s age, type of disease and his/her present condition.
There are different matters involved regarding the exercise. Before it, meditation is needed to be done in proper way for controlling mind. Stress is the main cause of all sickness and unrest of human being. So, it is very important to reduce the stress.
It is said to extract vital force from the cosmic power, but it cannot be done so easily. It is needed to give time regularly and make practice in proper way. Yoga, pranayama, meditation and neurobic gym all have its own styles and rules. Under the holistic system, programme is given taking into consideration soul-mind-body. In short, it can be said that holistic treatment has already gained trust among people in the country.
This system has brought good news for many patients, who suffered cardiovascular disease, by playing a leading role in the last 10 years. At present, the World Health Organization (WHO) stresses on increasing life force for prevention and control of cardiovascular disease. The Holistic Health Care Centre is trying to do that at Panthapath in the capital and at Jamal Khan Holistic Health Care Centre at Chittagong.
The treatment cost of cardiovascular disease is very expensive, hence, it is difficult for ninety percent people to go to doctors for availing of treatment facilities. Most of the people live in village and communication system all over the country is not improved.
Hence, there is possibility of death before taking cardiovascular patients to hospital. So, defeat the heart attack before it attack you, that is to say, keep your heart healthy and strong. The Holistic Health Care Centre is sincerely working to achieve that goal.
