Feni Municipal Ward Commissioner Abdullah Hil Mahmud Shiblu, one of the accused in Fulgazi Upazila Chairman Ekramul Haque killing case, gave a confessional statement before the Feni district court on Thursday. Shiblu, also a local Awami League leader, gave the deposition under Section 164 of Code of Procedure before the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Khairul Amin from 10:00am to 1:00pm.
Abul Kalam Azad, Investigation Officer and also Officer-in-Charge of Feni Model police station, said Shiblu gave the deposition after 12 days of remand. The main accused in the Ekram killing case, BNP leader Mohtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, was not granted police remand while prayed for before the court in the third time on Thursday. Earlier, he was granted eight days remand in the first step and one day in the second time.
Feni’s Fulgazi upazila chairman and upazila Awami League president Ekramul Haque was shot first and then burned alive in his car in broad daylight in the academy area in the town on May 20.
Police have so far arrested 23 persons in this connection. Except Mohtab Uddin Chowdhury Minar, the rest 22 are Awami League and Jubo League leaders.
Meanwhile, a tense situation has been prevailing in Fulgazi upazila for the last 16 days since the killing of Ekramul Haque. Besides party leaders and workers, general people have also been demanding the arrest and exemplary punishment of the killers. Hartals, demonstrations and processions were held in the upazila with participation of all.
Local party leaders also demanded transfer of Feni police super and Sadar thana OC, alleging that they were trying to divert the Ekram killing case in different direction.
Sources said, vested quarters have already sanctioned Tk 20 lakh to silence the agitating leaders and workers of the district. But the Chhatra League and Jubo League leaders in-charge of the district said they do not know anything about this. A vested quarter is spreading rumour against them, they added.
