Shibirmen, cops clash: 30 arrested

The activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir on Saturday clashed with police in different parts of the country. Some Shibir men and members of police were injured in the clashes. Police arrested at least 30 Shibir workers.
The clashes took place when the Shibir activists brought out processions as part of their countrywide programme, which was announced to protest the killing of a leader of the organisation and demanding release of the death convict Jamaat leader Muhammad Kamaruzzaman. Chapainawabganj Shibir leader Tahurul Islam died in a hospital in the capital on Thursday. He received bullet injury on October 29 during a demonstration programme.
The Shibir brought out processions in several parts of the capital city. The processions were sudden and for short time.
In Sylhet, at least five, including the driver of a police vehicle, were injured in a clash between the police and the Shibir men at Darga gate area in the city at noon. The victim was identified as Rubel Ahmed, 25. He is a driver of the human-hauler requisitioned by police. He was hit by bullet and was admitted at Sylhet’s MAG Osmani Medical College and Hospital. Shibir, however, claimed that Rubel is their activist.
The clash took place after Shibir brought out a procession. Police fired 30 rounds of rubber bullets to disperse the procession. At the time, Rubel was injured. Sylhet police claimed that Rubel was injured in the attack of Shibir men. Police arrested a Shibir activist from the spot and recovered an unexploded hand bomb. Later, police also arrested six leaders of the organisation, including its district unit president and general secretary.
In Bogra, police fired rubber bullets after Shibir men hurled two crude bombs targeting the law enforcers, who resisted their procession brought out at Satmatha in the district town in the morning. However, none was hurt in the attack. Police arrested eight Shibir men from the spot.
