The dawn to dusk hartal called by Chhatra Shibir gets thin response in the city as elsewhere in the district yesterday.
The civic life in the city was almost normal without any hindrances .Islami chatra shibir, a student wing of Jamaat- called dawn to dusk hartal in greater Chittagong yesterday protesting the arrest of former President of North district of shibir Faisal Muhammad Younus and the south district president Md. Tarek Hossain. This was disclosed thrugh a press release of South district Chatra shibir office secretary Azad Chowdhury yesterday.
The press release of Shibir signed by City Unit President Nurul Amin, South President HM Sohel, CU Unit president Mostafizur Rahman an South District Secretary Asadullah , sources said. Members of the law enforcement agencies maintained a strong security vigil during the hartal period, police and eyewitness said. A good number of vehicles were seen plying on the city streets while small number of buses and heavy vehicles on the long distance routes plied with police escort during the hartal. The attendance in the government and private offices was normal .Rickshaws and battery-run three-wheelers plied the city streets while presence of motorized vehicles was thin due to fear of possible vandalism and arson attack .All posh and kitchen markets seen open with as usual transactions and the supply of vegetables was abundant in the market . Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its front organizations dominated almost all the city streets by holding rallies and bringing out processions.
Chittagong Railway station sources said all scheduled trains to and from the port city left and arrived as per schedule.
Besides, the hartal did not affect the domestic and international flights at Chittagong Shah Amanat International Airport, Bangladesh Biman sources said.
Operational activities including loading and unloading of cargoes at ships inside the port and outer anchorage went on in full-swing but transportation of export-import goods to and from the port jetty was hampered due to disruption in vehicular movements on the roads, port sources said.
