Shibir-BCL clash at RU 3 held, 2 injured

RU Correspondent :A violent clash between Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) and Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Saturday night at Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Hall of Rajshahi University left at least two students injured.The injured were identified as Nahid, an activist of Shaheed Habibur Rahman Hall unit BCL and Tanzir Ahmed, an activist of Shibir, police said. Motihar police arrested three Shibir activists in connection with the incident. The detainees were identified as Tanzir Ahmed, Ratul Ahmed Apon and Anaet, third year students of economics, statistics and Arabic departments respectively.Ashok Chouhan, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Motihar Police Station said Nahid took primary aid from the university medical centre while Tanzir was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) with serious injuries under police custody.Hall sources said, Shibir leader Abdus Salam phoned a BCL activist and invited to come in the room No. 226 of Ziaur Rahman Hall around 2:30am. While some BCL leaders and activists of the hall unit were on their way to the room, Shibir leaders and activists switched off the light of the respective block and chased them. The Shibir men caught Nahid and beat him up with iron rods.Witnesses said, the BCL leaders and activists of Habibur Rahman Hall, Madar Box Hall and Suhrawardy Hall rushed to Ziaur Rahman Hall and chased Shibir activists. The BCL men led by Atiqur Rahman Sumon, Vice-President of BCL RU unit and Azharul Islam Shawon, Mass Communication Affairs Secretary caught three Shibir activists-Tanzir, Apon and Ashik. They severely beat Shibir men Tanvir and Apon with iron rods and cricket stumps while Ashik managed to flee away.Later, the BCL leaders handed over Tanzir and Apon to police. Police also raided the Ziaur Rahman Hall and detained Anaet suspecting him as Shibir activist. The situation on the campus is now under control, police said.Meanwhile, BCL RU unit President Mizanur Rahman Rana said that Shibir leader Salam was threatening our leaders and activists regularly. On Saturday night, Salam phoned and threatened again.”While they went there, Shibir men chased them and beat up Nahid. Later our boys chased Shibir and caught their three activists. The detainees were handed over to police,” he said.When contacted, RU Proctor Prof. Tarikul Hasan told this correspondent that a tense situation was created among some students in the hall on Saturday midnight. Later, law enforcers rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control,” he added.
