Sheikh Sadi Khan: A devoted legendary music director

Legendary music director Sheikh Sadi Khan has been enriched country’s music industry by virtue of owning correct Bengali songs in the heart from the beginning of his career. This living legend Ekushey Award winner music director turned 72 on March 3. But he celebrated his birthday only under homely arrangement. Before independence of Bangladesh, Sheikh Sadi Khan first composed song for noted singer Sabina Yasmin’s sister Fowzia Khan. Title of the song was Ja jare jare pakhi. In 1968, under Sheikh Sadi’s composition, late Abdul Jabbar and Arati Dhar rendered a duet song in Mostafa Kamal Syed produced BTV’s programme, Sur Sagor. During that time Shawkat Hayat Khan and Moushumi Kabir lent their voices for four songs for HMV in Sheikh Sadi Khan’s composition. Sheikh Sadi also worked as music director in late Abdullah Al Mamun’s movie Ekhoni Somoy in 1980. In that movie, the song Jibon mane jontrona in Sabina Yasmin’s voice and another song Ekta dolna jodi in voice of Abida Sultana brought Sheikh Sadi Khan into discussion among the film-lovers during that time. Later, he composed many popular play-back songs like Dake pakhi kholo ankhi, Hazar moner kachhe peroshno rekhe, Aamar moner akash-e aj, Kal sararat chhilo, Aamar e duti chokh pathorto noy, Bhalobaslei sobar sathe ghor badha jaina, Tumi roj bikele, Ami chirodin premero kangal, etc. Sheikh Sadi Khan worked as music director in more than 150 movies till now. He has composed more than 800 songs. He got the National Film Award in category of Music Director for Kazi Morshed’s Ghani and Jakir Hossain Raju’s Bhalobaslei Ghor Badha Jaina. He got the Ekushey Award in 2018. He last worked as music director for movies Bandhob and Podmar Prem. For the last five years, under his planning and direction, musical programme Smritimoy Gaangulo is being aired on BTV. While talking about himself, Sheikh Sadi Khan said, “I have turned into 72 years. I may not survive for long time. Many dreams remain incomplete. I want to do some good works. But I cannot manage time to do these works. I have some good plans also. If I do these projects our music industry will become enrich. Munshi Wadud is researcher of BTV’s music related programme, Smritimoy Gaangulo. But I felt pain to reduce timing of the programme. I don’t know why good programmes cannot get enough time to telecast in TV channels. I give advice to the new generation’s singers to concentrate for rendering songs and also to create own original songs. I have also planned to do something with them.”
Sheikh Sadi Khan is happy with his conjugal life with wife Rowshan Ara, son Rownak Ferdous Khan and daughter Shafufta Zabin.
