The 56th birthday of Sheikh Russel, the youngest son of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was observed through various programmes here on Friday.
The city unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) placed wreath at the portrait of Sheikh Russel followed by cutting a cake and holding a discussion, milad and doa mahfil at its office on the occasion.
The leaders and workers of the district and city units of Awami League (AL) and its associate bodies attended the programmes presided over by President of city unit of BCL Shafiur Rahman Swadhin.
President of city AL Shafiur Rahman Shafi, its General Secretary Tushar Kanti Mandal, Publicity Secretary Rezaul Islam Milon, Office Secretary of district AL Tauhidur Rahman Tutul and General Secretary of city unit BCL Sheikh Asif addressed the discussion.
Besides, the District Shishu Academy organised competitions on recitation of poems and self-composed poems on Sheikh Russel and drawing for children followed by discussion and prize distribution function at its auditorium in the afternoon.
Deputy Commissioner Md. Asib Ahsan attended the function held at Shishu Academy auditorium and distributed prizes among winners of different competitions as the chief guest.
With District Children Affairs Officer Mostaq Ahmed in the chair, former General Secretary of District Shishu Academy Tauhidur Rahman Tutul addressed the occasion as special guest.
The speakers said the conspirators assassinated Sheikh Russel mercilessly and brutally aiming at reversing independence through eliminating Bangabandhu’s blood from this soil.
Strongly condemning the assassination of Bangabandhu and most of his family members, including Russel on August 15, 1975, they said Bangladesh and Bangabandhu are inseparable and no conspiracy would be succeeded to destroy independence and sovereignty of the country.
Shafiur Rahman Shafi urged leaders of AL and its associate bodies to let the young generations know the true national history to inspire them in taking the nation ahead and realise Bangabandhu’s dream of building a developed Sonar Bangla.

Sheikh Russel was born on October 18 in 1964 at the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi.
He was assassinated along with most of his family members including his father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15 in 1975.
The birthday programmes included cake cutting, discussions, milad and doa mahfils, cultural functions, rallies, painting competitions and distribution of foods among the destitute people.
As part of the birthday programme, Khulna District Administration, Awami League and its associate organisations has arranged elaborate programmes including cake cutting, milad and doa mahfil, rally, discussion, cultural function, essay and art competition.
Leaders of AL and its associate bodies joined the programmes.
Marking the day, Khulna Shishu Academy organised a discussion meeting in cooperation with District Administration on the Shishu Acadamy campus.
Acting deputy commissioner of Khulna (LGED director) Ishrat Zahan addressed the discussion as the chief guest with ADC (General) Ziaur Rahman in the chair.
The function was addressed, among others, by District Women Affairs Officer Nargis Fatema Zamin and District Children Affairs Officer Md Abul Kalam.
Later, the chief guest distributed prizes among the winners of essay and art competition.
