Defending champions Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra made a positive start in the inaugural match of the Modhumoti Bank Independence Cup Football with a 3-0 goals victory over Chittagong Abahani held on Saturday at the Bangabandhu National Stadium.
After a barren first half Sheikh Russel took the lead in the 63rd minute as Jamaican midfielder Ricardo Cousins danced down the right flank and curved a neat cross in the middle of the box, Mithun Chowdhury took control of the ball and scored with a cool placing shot (1-0).
In the 67th minute Serbian attacker Miroslav Savanovic sent a long ball to Pascal Milien, the Haitian forward whose first attempt was blocked by Chittagong Abahani goalie Nahiduddin, but Pasacal placed the rebound into the net (2-0).
Mithun Chowdhury netted his second and completed the winners tally in the 73rd minute after Miroslav Savanovic paved the way for him with a neat cross from the left flank and Mithun right footed shot landed in the far post(3-0).
