Bangladesh Ambassador to the USA Mohammad Ziauddin has said Sheikh Kamal, the eldest son of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, dedicated himself to the youth development and guided them to be good citizens by involving them in the world of sports and culture, said a press release.
‘He was a beacon of inspiration and hope for the youth of the country,” the Ambassador said at a function marking the first ever Sheikh Kamal Memorial USA Western Regional Championship Tournament in Los Angeles on Sunday evening.
A total of six teams from the states of Southern California, Northern California, Seattle-
Washington, Utah, Colorado and Arizona participated in the tournament.
Ambassador Ziauddin said Sheikh Kamal revived and resurrected new life in both sports and culture after the war of liberation in 1971 and founded Abahani Krira Chakra Club and Spondon Shilpi Gosthi.
“His presence brought a breath of fresh air to the sporting and cultural world,” the envoy
recalled. Ambassador Ziauddin had personal acquaintance with Sheikh Kamal as they grew up in the same residential area in Dhaka.
Ziauddin who was a teacher of English language at Dhaka College used to meet Sheikh Kamal frequently when he was a student of Dhaka College during 1967 to 1969.
Making a flashback, the Ambassador said Sheikh Kamal was gifted with many talents that reached out equally to studies, sports and culture. He absorbed himself in these three areas despite being from the first family of Bangladesh and well versed in the world of politics. Leaving the allure of politics aside, he involved himself with youth development focusing with exuberance and youthful energy.
