Bangladesh Premier League Champions Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club suffered 4th consecutive defeat in four-team Group E of the AFC Cup’ 2016 losing to hosts Selangor FA in the away match at Selayan Municipal Council Stadium in Malaysia on Tuesday.
Like their home match in Dhaka, Sheikh Jamal DC suffered another frustrating defeat against Selangor FA after conceding a goal in the dying moment.
Ahmed Hazwan Bakri put the Selangor FA ahead in the 17th minute while Landing Darboe leveled the margin for Sheikh Jamal DC in the 36th minute.
When the match was heading for a 1-1 draw, Patrick Wleh scored the match-winner for the host team in the 89th minute of the match.
Patrick Wleh scored in the dying seconds enabling Selangor to take all three points against 10-man Sheikh Jamal DC and that keeps the Malaysian side in contention for a place in the Round of 16 in the 2016 AFC Cup.
Wleh struck in the 89th minute as Selangor eventually made their numeric superiority in the final 20 minutes count after Yeasin Khan was sent off for a late tackle on Andik Vermansyah, according to the AFC website.
Selangor had taken the lead after just 17 minutes when Andik turned Khan before surging into the penalty area and cutting the ball across for Ahmad Bakri to side foot home from seven yards out.
Andik shot over the bar in the 32nd minute as Selangor pushed for a second, and it was a miss they were to rue three minutes later as Sheikh Jamal levelled when Landing Darboe scored at the second attempt after the home defence failed to clear the danger.
Sheikh Jamal goalkeeper Maksudur Rahman pulled off a fine save to keep the scores level going into the interval as he tipped Andik’s long-range drive over the bar with two minutes remaining in the half.
Selangor’s hopes of taking all three points improved 20 minutes from time when Khan was sent off for upending Andik, but the Malaysian side struggled to break through until the dying seconds, when Ghanaian Wleh scored to the relief of the home fans.
Earlier, Sheikh Jamal suffered 0-4 defeat against Tampines Rovers in their away match in Singapore while they conceded 0-2 defeat against Celes La Salle of Philippines and 3-4 defeat against Selangir FA of Malaysia in their two home matches in Dhaka.
In the day’s other group match, Ceres La Salle of the Philippines beat Tampines Rovers of Singapore by 2-1 goals in their home match on Tuesday to dominate the Group E list with eight points from four matches.
Tampines Rovers followed them with seven points from four matches, Selangor FA of Malaysia were in the 3rd slot, also with seven points while Sheikh Jamal DC were in the bottom in the four-team fray and eliminated from the meet without any points, playing four matches.
In the remaining group matches, Sheikh Jamal will play Tampines Rovers at home on April 26 and will meet Celes La Salle in the away match on May 10.
