Sheikh Hasina’s return to Bangladesh to restore democracy is being observed on May 7. On this day in 2007, during the state of emergency declared by the then caretaker government, Awami League President and current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina returned to the country by overcoming hundreds of adversities after undergoing treatment in the United States.
On the occasion of the day, various programs are celebrated every year by the Awami League and its affiliated organizations. The day is a memorable day for the democracy-loving people in Bangladesh.
At that time, the then caretaker government imposed an illegal ban on Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina who returned to the country to restore democracy. The caretaker government was involved in a conspiracy to prevent Sheikh Hasina from entering Bangladesh. But the Awami League president announced to return to the country ignoring the illegal ban of the then government.
Protests against illegal bans erupted worldwide. The then caretaker government was forced to lift the ban under the pressure of Sheikh Hasina’s determination, courage and democracy-loving people on her homecoming.
When Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina returned to Dhaka on May 7, millions of people gave her a warm welcome. A procession was brought to welcome the daughter of Bangabandhu to the historic Bangabandhu Bhaban from Dhaka Airport. Returning to the country, she started a new struggle to restore the lost democratic rights of the people. Under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina, the people united to restore democracy.
She was arrested on July 16, 2007, in a conspiracy case. He was detained until her release on parole on June 11, 2008. After being released on parole, Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina returned home on December 4 after going abroad for treatment. Democracy in Bangladesh was restored through a massive movement and struggle under the courageous and far-sighted leadership of Sheikh Hasina.
In the face of the movement, the then caretaker government was forced to hold parliamentary elections. The Awami League-led grand alliance formed the government with a huge margin in the 9th parliamentary elections held on December 29, 2008.
Bangabandhu’s daughter Sheikh Hasina was elected Prime Minister for the second time and took charge of the country. She started the struggle to build a developed and prosperous state by recovering the country from a state of crisis. In the journey of change of days, Bangladesh is advancing at a breakneck pace on the highway of development.
On the occasion of the day, the program has been canceled on the instructions of Awami League President Sheikh Hasina due to the global pandemic crisis.
On the occasion of May 7, the Bangladesh Awami League is urging the leaders and workers of the Awami League and allied organizations and the people to pray for the health and longevity of Sheikh Hasina and to offer special prayers to the Most Merciful while sitting at home.
