Indira Gandhi Culture Centre (IGCC) organised an evening of Shehnai recital by ICCR troupe from India at the IGCC in the city’s Gulshan area recently.
A four-member Shehnai group had sent by Indian Council for Cultural Relations, Government of India, to participate in Republic Day celebrations being organised by the High Commission of India.
The group led by Sanjeev and Ashwani Shankar, brothers, who played the Shehnai and were accompanied by Anand Shankar on Dukkad and Mithilesh Kumar Jha on Tabla.
Shehnai is an Indian instrument and the word literally means ‘King of Wind Instruments.’ The presence of Shehnai can be traced back to the Vedic era and is also seen in murals and sculptures of Ajanta and Ellora. About 100 years ago, Shehnai was a folk instrument but because of the efforts of great maestros Ustaad Bismillah Khan, Pandit Anant Lal, Pandit Daya Shankar, the dimension of Shehnai playing was broadened with the introduction of new technique and style. Now Shehnai is considered a classical instrument on which almost any raga accompanied by any tala can be played with marvelous clarity, beautiful sound, and modulation, and it has become a very famous Indian classical instrument.
Sanjeev and Ashwini are sons of internationally acclaimed Shehnai maestro Pandit Daya Shankar and grandsons of the legendary Shehnai virtuoso late Pandit Anant Lal of the Benaras Gharana. They were awarded scholarship by the Government of India, Department of Culture for their outstanding talent. They also won the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy’s Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Purashkar for the year 2010-11.
The brothers have given a large number of performances in India and abroad – SPIC MACAY Music in the park, Delhi, many Republic Day and Independence Day celebrations in Delhi, functions at India Habitat Centre, Sangeet Natak Music Festival and many other music festivals etc in India and abroad in France, Spain, Ireland, UK, Scotland, Hungary, Slovakia, Japan, Bangladesh, USA, Canada, Indonesia, Switzerland, Norway, Holland and Portugal.
