Dr Md Shairul Mashreque :
Shyamal Mitra was a Bengali singer, composer and producer. Along with Hemanta Mukherjee and Manna Dey, he was the most notable musician of the golden era of Bengali music industry. He was born in January 14 1929 at Naihati and died in November 15 1987. He was survived by his children Saikat Mitra, Sibal Mitra and Monobina.
Like Hemonto Shamal Mitra was rising to ascendency at the time when Bengali modern songs from Calcutta gained widespread popularity. Many of his beautiful songs take hold of Bengali music lovers. What actually appeals much to our mind and heart was the way Shaymol Mitra used to render songs with his own style and attractive voice.
While listening to his own renditions of his number of songs in late fifty and early sixties he could move the music lovers all with his golden and attractive voice. This was an era of modern Bengali songs and Shaymol stood at the forefront of this era.
We noticed how well Shyamal Mitra performed on the space of modern Bengali songs. His songs sound so young that one must comment that Shaymal attracted the tender aged youngsters of our time. There never has been nor there do anyone like Shaymal singing romantic and sad songs in the realm of Bengali songs. His voice is amazing, so completely pure, and emotional. I think he’s one of the greatest singers in the subcontinent that ever lived! I loved his songs ever since I was a child with glimpses from my music gossip with my siblings and friends.
I grew up enjoying Kolkata’s old songs and movies. Especially these songs were the best with their ever lasting appeal. Akash Bani Kolkata had a daily programme of modern Bengali songs. There was Anurodher Asar every Sunday presenting attractive songs for the interesting listeners.
Shaymal Mitra performed all with attractive voice giving us all sort enjoyment. He sang the song like Sediner Sona Jhora Sondhya-the song taking to the sweet moments of roaming about with romantic mood in the beautiful evening. This number of Shaymal takes to the glimpses of the moment in Chittagong during my childhood when I along with my mother and brothers went out in the evening wandering and shopping in City Store. Score of songs performed by Shaymol have taken position deep into our mind with a feeling of beauty. I am seized by nostalgia when I remember him with the repletion of the songs like: Tumi ar ami sudhu jibonero khela ghar, Bhalo baso Tumi Sunesi Anek Bar, O Simul Bon Dao Rangie Mon, Ei Jhir Jhir Pialere Kunje, Aha Oiakabakaje Path, Hangso Pakha Die, , Jodi Kichu Amare Sudhao , Jodi Dako epar hote Ei Ami ar Phirbe na What is amazing was his wonderful rendering spellbinding the Bengali listeners. It was not only the pristine sensation; it’s transcendental molding the imaginations of the contemporary music lovers. From the early hood till now I have been conversant with modern Bengali songs; no one strikes me as charming as Shaymal and Hemonto. Both represent one of the diamonds of rich heritage of Music. Shyamal Mitra will last for ever by his unique melodious voice to the heart of all. Sweetness of his style is incomparable.
The songs like Jibon Khatar prati Pratae, Tomare Peechi Bole Sathi Bhubans e are really melodious blended with a sweet melody stirring Bengali life. Please listen and you will feel what love is all about?
Nam Rekhesi Bonolata, Ja Jare Ja Ja Pakhi, Ki name deke Bolbo Tomake , Ami che che Dekhi Saradin, Dur Noe Beshi Dur Sajano sajano Badhano Ghater Pare and Viru Viru Chkkhete Cheye Cheye are excellent and ever green songs through the life standing always new. From the songs like Gaaner Bhuban Bhoree Debo and Tori Khani Vasie Dilam Ei Kule, Basarini Basorini Bhor Je Hoe Gelo, Bhomora pholer Bone Modhu Nite one can comment that like Rafi Shaymal Mitra was a natural baritone yet could sing high tenor notes with ease reflecting a range of emotions. His voice was really heavenly both in the realm of sad and romantic songs.
Shaymal Mira used to appear at the studio from time to time to record songs as a playback singer. Film songs performed by him remain ever-remembered fitting the situation and the heroes. They were noted with high quality and effects. For example the songs in the film Dea Nea, starred by Uttam Kumar. Shaymal gifted songs recording some numbers in Dhaka like Pathero Sathi (film Ye Kore Bie), Chena Chena Lage Tobu Ochena. . That he could sing with ease without any facial expression is clear from my watching his song in the stage telecast by BTV.
Tomar somadhi phoole phole Dhaka Ke Boley Ar Tumo Nei Tumi Asho Mon Boley Tai. Please listen and hum with appeal to those who really love and those who take deep pains in the state of melancholy for missing her beloved.
In fine, let me express that Shaymal Mira was the glory and he share the golden age of modern Bengali songs. The ability in him to transform himself into a voice suiting the demand of the composure and lyrics was a quality that was unmatched.
He lived in the era when the giants Hemonto, Dijen, Manna Dey, Talat, Satinath, Subir Sen, Tarun Manabendra, Dhanjoy,Jjogonmoy, Kishore, to include a few, made their own singular contributions to the storehouse of modern Bengali songs. Yet Shaymal Mira was different with his own extraordinary style difficult to copy. We can feel the effects of every song he recorded. n
