Sharp rise of Rice price in Rangpur

The prices of all types of rice have marked a sharp rise in Rangpur district during last a couple of weeks, much to the sufferings of the middle and lower income people.
According to the retailers, per kg of miniket variety is being sold at Tk 45 to Tk 46 while it was sold at Tk 42 to 43 two weeks ago, local swarna is sold at Tk 38 to 39 per kg against its previous price of Tk 36 to Tk 37 per kg , Per kg BR-28 at Tk 42 to Tk 43 while it was available at Tk 38 to 39 before. Coarse rice is sold at Tk 34 to Tk 35 per kg against its previous price of Tk 31 to Tk 32 one kg before.
Pappu , a rice retailer at City Bazar told The New Nation that shortage of rice supply in local markets is responsible for the recent price hike.
 It is alleged that some people including, businessmen, stocked huge amount rice to get a better price in future. Many wholesalers are not supplying adequate rice in the market from their stock.
A number of wholesalers including Hamidul, Mannan at City market told The New Nation that rice import through Hili land port under Dinajpur has almost stopped during last couple of weeks due to high import tax , as a result rice price is soaring.
Moreover, Aman paddy harvesting is yet to start in full swing across the region which is another cause of price hike of rice, he added.
