The BNP has come down heavily on retired judge of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik for his ‘controversial activities and comments’. The party said that Justice Manik is trying to make the country’s apex court controversial with his ‘imprudent’ comments.
BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a press conference at the party’s Nayapaltan central office in the city on Tuesday criticised Justice Manik for his comments against the BNP Chairperson and the Chief Justice. A prudent and judicious person can’t make such comments, said Rizvi Ahmed.
Earlier on Monday, Shamsuddin Choudhury Manik commented that Chief Justice SK Sinha is working as the spokesperson of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to implement the BNP’s agenda.
Protesting the comment, Rizvi Ahmed said, “If the Chief Justice is Khaleda Zia’s spokesman, people also know whose spokesperson you were. He can’t tolerate it as the Chief Justice is speaking in favour of justice and the rule of law. That is why he is making such comments.”
The BNP leader also blamed former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haq for making the apex court as ‘controversial’. “The apex court never turned so controversial and disrespectful since the British period. Judges like Shamsuddin Manik and Khairul Haq have made it controversial,” he said.
He alleged that persons like Justice Manik wanted to turn the court, which is the last resort for helpless people, into a centre for implementing the ‘ruling Awami League’s political agenda’. He also alleged that the current regime has completely snatched people’s right of expression by eliminating democracy.
