Hindu community members of Barisal on Wednesday night and early Thursday observed Maha Shamshan Dipali at Maha Shamshan Ghat, and Dipabali and Diwali Utsav at their houses.
This religious festival of Barisal Hindu community observing with special religious rituals at Barisal Maha Shamshan since 1850 on the night before of Kalipuja for the blessings of the departed souls of dearest and nearest ones, said Narayan Chandra Dey Naru, former secretary of Barisal Maha Shamshan Rakkha Committee.
Manik Mukherjee Kudu, secretary of Barisal Maha Shamshan Rakkha Committee, said the Maha Shamshan Ghats (the burning spot or cremation-grounds and grave yard of the Hindu dead bodies) at Kawnia Marokkhola and Aadi Shamshan Ghat of the Natun Bazar areas of the city became over crowded with thousands of the members of the Hindu community.
The devotees offered flowers and foods, arranged various types of rituals (Puja), special prayers, washed and lightened candles at the preserved places of the cremated dead bodies at the Shamshan Ghat for the eternal blessings of the departed souls of their dead dearest and nearest ones, community sources said.
The houses of the Hindu Communities decorated with lighting on this occasion.Kishor Kumar Dey, secretary of Barisal Maha Shamshan Rakkha Committee , said the festival observed peacefully in festive mood with special religious rituals before and on the night of Kalipuja for the blessings of the departed souls of dearest and nearest ones.
