Selina Hayat Ivy, Mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC), hopes that local Awami League heavyweight Shamim Osman will campaign for her as the party’s nominated candidate in the upcoming NCC polls.
She told reporters at her Narayanganj residence on Saturday morning that,
“Shamim Osman is an Awami League politician and I’m the party’s candidate. He will campaign for me if he’s loyal to the party.” Selina Hayat Ivy defeated Awami League candidate Shamim Osman, a member of the powerful Osman family, in the 2011 NCC election to become the country’s first woman Mayor. The two had been at each others throats since then.
Downplaying the rivalry, Ivy said, “There is no ‘division or tussle’ between us. The grassroots leaders and activists are elated that I got the nomination. I hope minor misunderstandings, if there’s any, will be resolved.”
The NCC Mayor said she wants to work with all the leaders and activists of Awami League for upcoming polls. “Many things happen during elections but when the party nominates someone, all must abide by the decision,” she said.
Asked about her arch rival Shamim Osman, she said, ‘If needed I would go to Shamim’s house to seek votes for my party, as he is one of my voters.’
Ivy said that she would do the same for Narayanganj Unit Awami League president Anwar Hossain as he worked for her election campaigns in the past polls. ‘This time I will request him to work for my electioneering,’ she said.
The ruling Awami League chose her on Friday to represent the party at the NCC election. She had not been among the three candidates proposed by local Awami League.
Narayanganj City Corporation is scheduled to go to polls on December 22.
