Shalihar Mass Killing Day was observed in Gouripur upazila of Mymensingh district on Friday paying glowing tributes to those who were martyred on 21 August in 1971.
On this day 14 people were killed by Pakistani army in Shalihar village under Gouripur upazila. The attack began in the morning. They opened fire on the villagers of Shalihor during the liberation war of 1971. As a result Ganendra Mohan Kar, Mohini Mohan Kar, Jogesh Chandra Biswas, Nabar Ali, Kiroda Sundari, Shachindra Chandra Biswas, Tarini Kantha Biswas, Kailash Chandra Namodas, Shatragna Namodas, Ramendra Chandra Sarkar, Aboni Mohan Sarkar, Debendra Chandra Namodas, Kamini Kantha Biswas were killed by Pakistani forces on a single day. Killing the people indiscriminately, set fire to houses and property and looted business establishments, leaving a trail of destruction at Gouripur.
Different organisations, including socio-cultural, civil society, students, freedom fighters and political parties, observed the day through various programmes, condemning the barbarism and brutalities carried out by Pakistani Army on the unarmed villagers
 AL member of Sunamganj district committee and AL General Secretary of Taherpur upazila of Sunamganj , Amal Kranti Kar, grand son of Ganendra Mohan Kar said ,” After killing my grand father Ganendra Mohan Kar and grand father’brother Mohini Mohan Kar in Shalihor’s genocide on 21 August,1971, My father Badal Chandra Kar, a village doctor went to Taherpur upazila to help the freedom fighters and settled there” He added that this sad event carried out in Gouripur upazila was one of the most terrible ones in Bangladesh.
He wants a recognition of those who were killed on 21 August in 1971 and sent an application to honourable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 18 July, 2017.
Meanwhile, Gouripur Upazila Administration, Muktijoddha Sangsad , Muktijoddha Santan Comand and Gouripur Press Club organised candles light programme on the premises of monument of Shalihar Killing in the afternoon. The rally was chaired by Md. Abidur Rahman, AC (Land) of Gouripur upazila while Freedom Fighter Nazim Uddin Ahmed MP was present as chief guest, Upazila Chairman Mofazzal Hossain khan, Borhan Uddin, OC of Gouripur Thana, and prominent persons were present and addressed the audience
Different organisations observed the day through elaborate programmes including placing of wreaths at the monument at the village of Shalihar and a memorial meeting.
