IM Abu Suafian Shakil of Golden Sporting Club became 22nd in the Commonwealth Chess Championship, which was held at Waskaduwa in Sri Lanka. IM Shakil earned 6 points out of 9 games and became 22nd in the tie-breaking system. The 9th or last round games were held on Saturday and Shakil lost to Indian GM Abhijit Kunte.
GM Abhijit Gupta of India became unbeaten champion with 8 points and GM Sunilduth Lyna Narayanan of India became unbeaten runner-up with 7½ points. A total 185 players from 10 Commonwealth countries took part in the event. Elegant International Chess Academy sponsored IM Shakil to participate in the championship.
