Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan’s determination to take the field, though he was not fully prepared following an injury, for the first Test against the West Indies impressed his coach Steve Rhodes.
Rhodes termed the world famed all-rounder Shakib’s comeback and performance as an ‘amazing effort’.
Rhodes expressed his excitement saying, “I think the one thing to talk about the last Test which is really important for me is that I want to pay tribute to Shakib. That is an amazing effort that he did [play the game].”
The head coach, Rhodes, came up with this enthusiasm at the team hotel in Chattogram on Sunday, a day after Bangladesh’s 64-run win against visiting West Indies.
Shakib sustained a finger injury, which required him to undergo surgery and missed all three formats of the preceding Zimbabwe series, and returned to practice only days before the start of the first Test against West Indies.
The captain scored a handy 34 in the first innings and claimed five wickets in the two innings of the match to go past the double of 3000 runs and 200 wickets – leapfrogging Ian Botham to become the quickest to achieve the feat.
“He (Shakib) is a great tactician and he played his part and he will be better for running going into the next Test match. He is an important part of our team because he is the captain,” Rhodes continued.
