Superb bowling display by Shakib Al Hasan to see Bangladesh fight back as visiting England tottering their second innings at 228 for 8 at stumps on the third day of first Test of Rocket two-match Test series at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium on Saturday.
The visitors however took a overall 273 runs lead after the third day’s play and they have two more wickets in hand, after Bangladesh dismissed their first innings at 248 on the third day in reply to a England’s first innings total of 293 runs.
The two English night watch batsmen Chris Woakes and Stuart Broad were on the crease with 11 and 10 runs as the stumps were drawn for the day.
All rounder Shakib was superb with ball as he grabbed five England’s wickets on the third day conceding 79 runs.
Besides, Kamrul Hasan Rabbi, Taijul Islam and Mehedi Hasan Miraz took one wicket each giving away 24, 40 and 54 runs respectively.
Earlier, Bowlers struck early as England suffered batting jolt in their second innings losing their three wickets in the first session on the third day. The Tigers bowlers, especially Shakib Al Hasan, continued to threaten inroad picking up wickets in regular intervals.
Mehedi Hasan Miraz gave Bangladesh the first success on the day dismissing England skipper Alastair Cook for 12 runs while Shakib Al Hasan sent back to Ben Duckett for 15 runs.
Shakib took his second wicket on the day as he captured the wicket of Joe Root for 1 just before the lunch break on the third day.
However, Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow rescued England from total embarrassment as they contributed 127 runs for the 6th wicket stand to stretch the England’s lead, but Rabbi struck on the stubborn partnership to bring back his side in match removing Bairstow for 47 runs. The right handed batsman Bairstow cracked six boundaries during his 95-ball stay on the crease.
Stokes was looking good with bat on the crease but Shakib sent back Stokes to the pavilion to bring his side in game. Stokes played a responsible 85 runs off 151 balls with the help of six boundaries and three over boundaries before he was trapped leg before wicket.
Earlier, Bangladesh resumed their first innings on the third day (Saturday) with overnight score of 221 for 5 and finally dismissed at 248 allowing England to take 45 runs first innings lead.
Bangladesh lost all their remaining five wickets on the day adding only 27 runs in the scoreboard.
Ben Stokes was the most successful bowler as he grabbed four Bangladesh wickets conceding 26 runs while Moeen Ali supported him with three wickets for 75 runs.
