NCC election: Shakhawat BNP candidate

The BNP on Tuesday named former district unit President of Ainjibi Samity Advocate Shakhawat Hossain as the mayor candidate in the upcoming Narayanganj City Corporation polls.
The party’s Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi announced it in a press briefing in the BNP’s Naya Paltan office. The NCC polls will take place on December 22.
On November 18, the ruling Awami League chose incumbent Mayor Selina Hayat Ivy for its mayor candidate.
The BNP chief Khaleda Zia decided to announce Shakhawat’s name on Monday night after holding a meeting with the party’s Narayanganj unit leaders at her Gulshan office.
district unit BNP President Taimur Alam Khandakar, General Secretary Kazi Moniruzzaman and City unit General Secretary ATM Kamal among others were present on the meeting.
Meeting sources said that the grassroots leaders proposed Taimur Alam Khandakar’s name for the race.
As he expressed unwillingness to contest the December 22 polls, grassroots leaders proposed the name of former lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad, who also refused to contest.
The grassroots leaders then proposed the names of Shakhawat Hossain, ATM Kamal, Abdul Hai Razu and Mamun Haider. The name of Shakhawat, a lawyer of the plaintiffs in the sensational seven-murder case of Narayangonj, came prominently.
Khaleda urged the party leaders to make a pledge to work together for the party candidate. She also enquired about the election atmosphere in Narayanganj and the possibility of the party’s success in the polls.
