A Dhaka court on Sunday placed former Dhaka City Corporation Ward Commissioner Saidur Rahman Shahid known as Shahid Commissioner on a four-day fresh remand in a murder case.
Dhaka’s Chief Judicial Magistrate Court’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Tayebul Hassan passed order rejecting bail petition of Shahid and allowed
police to interrogate him on a four-day fresh remand after hearing. The case was filed in connection with the murder of Keraniganj Awami League leader Atiqullah Chowdhury.
Earlier, Gandaria Police interrogated him in a case filed under the Arms Act. He was sent to the jail after the five-day remand. However, on February 16, he was shown arrested in Atiqullah murder case. Atiqullah’s body was recovered on December 11 last year from a straw field with his hands and legs tied. His son Saidur Rahman Chowdhury filed a case the following day without naming anyone.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the former DCC Commissioner, raiding his Gandaria house in the capital. They allegedly recovered three foreign pistols, three magazines and 62 round bullets from Shahid’s possession.
Shahid, once a listed criminal, had contested the January 5 general election as an independent candidate. He was convicted of several times including murder.
RAB reportedly informed that Shahid was devising anarchy with the help of his accomplices. But they managed to escape the arrest.
On May 29, 2003, Shahid was sentenced to death for killing Advocate Habibur Rahman Mandal at Banogram in the Old town of Dhaka on August 20 in 2000.
He was also accused of killing Ward Commissioner Shahadat Hossain Sikder on September 29 in 2003 and Jubadal leader Suja on May 4 in 1999. He is now facing at least 18 cases, including 11for murder.
Shahid was released on bail from Faridpur jail on August 9 in 2009.
