Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) personnel arrested Saidur Rahman Shahid, known as Shahid commissioner, from his Gendaria residence in the capital early Tuesday and seized four firearms from his possession.
Shahid, a former commissioner of ward No. 47 under Dhaka City Corporation (South) (ward No. 84 before the split of DCC), is an accused in a number of cases including murder, said Golam Sarwar, Commanding Officer of RAB-10, at a press briefing at his office in the capital’s Dhalpur area.
He was earlier convicted in some cases but he obtained bail from the higher court, the RAB official said.
Acting on a tip-off that Shahid along with his six to seven accomplices were taking preparation to create anarchy, RAB raided his residence at 3:00am, Sarwar told reporters.
But RAB could not nab his accomplices, as they fled through a window of a five-storied building where Shahid is used to live, the RAB official said.
However, RAB members recovered three illegal and one legal firearms and 62 bullets from his house.
Shahid participated in the 10th parliament election held on January 5 as an independent candidate of Dhaka-6 constituency and lost.
On Jan 2, three days before the national election, police had arrested Shahid’s accomplice Hafizur Rahman from the same house with a revolver, a pistol and a shotgun. But Shahid could not be arrested at that time, though he was in the building at that time.
Sutrapur Police Station OC Khalilur Rahman had told the media then that Shahid was facing trial in several cases.
Five year ago, the High Court acquitted Shahid when he was serving jail term in connection with the Advocate Habibur Rahman Mandal murder.
Few other murder charges against him are currently pending with the High Court.
