Staff Reporter :
Regent Group Chairman Md Shahed alias Shahed Karim had threatened at least two contractors for demanding their payment.
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Senior Assistant Superintendent (media) Jisanul Haque confirmed the matter to the media on Monday.
The CID is now questioning Shahed on a 14-day remand in two separate cases filed with Uttara West Police Station.
Rafiqul Islam Helali, one of the owners of the Rusafa Construction, filed one of the two cases on July 13.
According to the case, Rafiqul said Shahed, and his associates Masud Parvez and Nasiruddin, gave him a work order of Tk 43,000,000 to supply sand from Sylhet for construction work near Kanchan Bridge in Rupganj. Later, Shahed gave another work order of Tk22,000,000 for some construction work at Kurchimora near Dhaleshwari Bridge.
Rafiqul said although his company submitted the bills regularly, Shahed only gave them a cheque of Tk11,54,303. However, the cheque bounced when the company tried to withdraw the amount.
Later, he went to Shahed’s office to demand payment of the arrears. Shahed allegedly threatened them of dire consequences and threw them out of his office.
Another victim Hafizuddin Bahar also faced the same and also filed the second case with the police station on July 16. Hafizuddin said in the case statement that Shahed and his associates gave him a work order of Tk12.6 crore for supplying sand from Sylhet for construction work at Kanchan Bridge area.
Shahed also gave him a cheque as payment, which also bounced as the bank account had insufficient funds.
Hafizuddin was also allegedly threatened by Shahed while asking for his payment.
CID ASP Mohammad Jahirul Haque and ASP Jahangir Hossain, the investigation officer of two cases, said that it was not the right time to say anything as CID is still questioning Shahed in remand.
Earlier on July 6, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) mobile court raided Shahed’s hospital in Dhaka’s Uttara on charges of giving false reports of coronavirus tests and taking money from patients in violation of contracts with the government.
The next day, the RAB filed a case against 17 people at Uttara West Police Station in this connection. Later, Shahed was arrested from Satkhira border area on July 15.
