Popular actress Shahana Sumi’s parents were directly involved with the language movement. Sumi was the former student of Department of Drama at University of Dhaka.
In two phases, she did job in reputed English medium school Scholastica for eight years. But her dedication was to acting. For this reason, leaving job, she again concentrated to acting. Basically to play the title role in Wahiduzzaman Diamond’s movie Nacholer Rani in 2006, Shahana Sumi came into
discussion. Before this movie, she first acted in Nurul Alam Atique’s TV drama Cycle er Dana. However, Sumi started her acting career through theatre group Prachyanat since 1999. She came into limelight in the title role with this theatre group’s drama Koinnya, directed by Azad Abul Kalam.
Many persons still now call her Koinnya for her performance in the drama. Under the banner of Prachyanat, she also got appreciation from audience to act in dramas Circus Circus,
A Man For All Seasons and Tragedy Polashbari. Besides acting
in this theatre group, Sumi is also working as a teacher
at Pracyanaut School of Acting & Design.
After acting in movie Nacholer Rani, Sumi took a long time break from acting in the big screen. Then she acted in Gias Uddin Selim’s Swapnojaal and Badrul Anam Soud’s Gohin Baluchor. Then after taking three years break, she acted in Saiful Islam Mannu’s new movie Payer Chhap where she played an important role. In last March, Sumi got appreciation to act in Liberation War based drama Tumi-e Aamar Desh, which was aired on BTV. Sumi is little bit seen to act in drama serial. But liking story and her role she is acting in Shamim Zaman’s ongoing serial Priyojon. Therefore, she is hopeful for acting in Robiul Alam Robi’s short film titled Hello Ladies. Born in Chattogram, Shahana Sumi’s hometown is Nilphamari. She said, “I am grateful to the residents of Nilphamari because they still remember my father Ustad Waliur Rahman’s name. I have love and fascination about
acting. I got viewers’ loves and still getting it. For this attraction, I always try to act in good projects. After many struggles, I have come into this position. Though I did job in a school for several years but acting always attracts me. I took part in shooting of a new movie Payer Chhap. I have liked story of this movie. I believe viewers will enjoy the movie.”
