Junayed Babunagari, amir of Hefajat-e-Islam, said Shah Ahmad Shafi, former amir of the Islamist group, died a natural death, calling the allegation of “killing” Shafi “politically motivated”.
Babunagari was speaking at a press conference organised at Hathazari Madrasa on Wednesday. He was reading out a statement.
“He died as Allah intended. Those who formed an autocratic system centring Ahmad Shafi and cracked down on innocent students of the madrasa are now out to paint it as murder,” he said.

This is part of a conspiracy to disrupt order in the country, Babunagari claimed.
“Those who filed the [murder] case against Hefajat leaders lost earth beneath their feet. They tarnished the fame and honour of Ahmad Shafi when he was alive with their greed,” Babunagari alleged.
The top leader of Hefajat urged the government to withdraw the case. Otherwise, they will go for tougher demonstrations, he said.
