Senior Journalist Muhammad Shafiqur Rahman and News Editor of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Quamrul Islam Chowhdury became President and General Secretary respectively of the 17-member management committee of
the Jatiya Press Club elected here yesterday on the basis of general consensus. Other office bearers are: Senior Vice-President: Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Vice President: Amirul Islam Kagoji, Treasurer: Kartik Chatterjee, Joint Secretaries: Ashraf Ali and Elias Khan.
The 10-member committee include: Amanullah Kabir, Khondoker Monirul Alam, Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, Saiful Alam, Shyamal Dutta, Shamsuddin Ahmed Charu, Mollah Jalal, Sardar Farid Ahmed, Hasan Arefin and Shamsul Haq Durrani.
Former President of the Dhaka Union of Journalists’ (DUJ) and a senior member of the JPC Elahi Newaz Khan Shaju announced the names of the committee as per the permission given by senior journalist M Shahjahan Mian, who chaired the meeting that elected the committee for 2015-2016.
In addition, the meeting in a resolution decided to set-up the mural of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on the Jatiya Press Club premises. In another resolution, it was proposed that a white paper would be published on the irregularities and corruption of the past committees of the JPC.
Another resolution passed by the meeting proposed amendment to the constitution of the Club for raising the number of members from existing 1,000 to 1,500 in course of time.
Earlier, Prime Minister’s Media Advisor and Editor of The Observer Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury and senior journalists Amanullah Kabir, Golam Sarwar, Hasan Shariar, Khondoker Monirul Alam, Abul Kalam Azad, Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, Altaf Mahmud, Kazi Siraj, Elahi Newaz Khan, Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan and Quddus Afrad addressed the meeting.
Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury in his speech decried the activities of the past and said that the Club had been transformed into a party platform. “Henceforth, it would not be so, as there is a general consensus among the club members to keep this institution free from any political influence,” he said.
Amanullah Kabir also echoed the same and said that the Club is a saner place for its members, not to be used for any political party’s agenda. He also said that the “consensus committee” would resolve the problems, created by past managements.
Khondoker Monirul Alam, also a past President of the JPC, said that the Club atmosphere was polluted in 2002 after a large number of members were included under a particular persuasion, ultimately creating a crisis.
He thanked all members for extending their cooperation towards overcoming the crisis peacefully and urged all to work together for maintaining the sanctity of JPC at any cost.
Earlier, the meeting observed a one-minute silence as a mark of respect to Jatiya Press Club members, who died recently. They are: JPC life-members Hasanuzzaman Khan and A B M Musa, senior members Alhaj Zahirul Haq, Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury, Monwar Ahmed, Mir Mohiuddin Shohan, Azizur Rahim Piu and Saiful Islam Talukdar.
