Shab-e-Barat teaches us to be selfless

THE nation celebrates Sheb-e-Barat tonight seeking Almighty Allah’s blessings for well-being of mankind, salvation of departed souls and prosperity for individuals and their families in the days ahead. The event is observed in the Muslim world on 15th Shaban every year – two weeks ahead of the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan. People in Bangladesh will celebrate the night with vigils, prayers and devotion with indoor religious rites and outdoor festivities in mosques and other holy places ending with morning prayers.

Shab-e-Barat also marks the entry of Prophet Muhammad (Sm) into the city of Mecca giving the day a special significance to Muslims all over the world. In Muslim religious belief, the night is treated as ‘the night of deliverance; night of records’ and night of assignment’ that all have link to divinity with Allah’s blessings bestowed on mankind from the heaven.

As per religious sayings, Allah keeps open his Doors of Mercy and Forgiveness this night and wait to hear people asking for forgiveness and whatever they want to be happy and healthy. But, there is some special “Not Dos” also on this occasion such as the one who creates disunity among Muslims and unjustly takes away property of another Muslim or any person – they will not get God’s forgiveness. He or she must rectify the wrong doing before seeking God’s mercy. Similarly leaders from local community to national life can only seek divine blessings after fulfilling responsibility to people. They should not kill people, torture them and deprive others, particularly infants of their property to be eligible for God’s forgiveness. It is a day of reckoning and soul searching to help others and keep away from crimes and corruption.

We also pray on this occasion that Almighty Allah will give us selfless leadership at all levels to bring unity to the nation. The ideals of Shab-e-Barat can’t be fulfilled until we can establish selfless leadership for the nation.
