The overall flood situation in 16 north, northwestern and central districts of the country has further worsened due to continuous rise in water level of the four major rivers.
The major river basins crossed danger marks at 26 more points as they continued to rise due to incessant downpours and onrush of water from the upstream, according to a bulletin of Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) issued on Monday.
In next 24 hours the flood situation in Lalmonirhat, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogura, Jamalpur and Sirajganj may deteriorate while the flood situation in Netrokona, Sunamganj and Sylhet may remain stable.
However, the flood situation in Chattogram and Bandarban is likely to improve during the period.
Water levels at 68 river stations monitored by the FFWC have marked rise while 22 stations recorded fall.
The major rivers in rising trend are-The Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma rivers may continue rising in next 72 hours and the Dhaleswari river at Elasinghat may cross danger level in next 24 hours
Brahmaputra basin
The flood situation deteriorated further yesterday following inundation of fresh areas as major rivers, excepting Teesta, marked rise to flow above their danger marks at 11 points in the Brahmaputra basin.
Officials of Water Development Board (WDB) said the situation worsened in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogura and Sirajganj while it remained mostly unchanged in Rangpur, Nilphamari and Lalmonirhat during the past 24 hours till yesterday afternoon.
The districts’ administration sources said, around seven lakh people have been affected by floodwater and sporadic erosion continues along the riverbanks in affected areas.
Many flood-hit people have taken shelters at flood shelters, flood control embankments and institutions and the administrations have enhanced evacuation and relief activities in affected areas.
Besides, standing crops on 8,603 heaters of land have been inundated by floodwater in 14 unions of three upazilas in Bogura district.
DRRO Rangpur ATM Akhteruzzaman said the district administration has allocated 110 tonnes of rice and Tk 3 lakh for distribution among 17,500 affected families of three upazilas in the district.
DRRO of Kurigram Khairul Anam said the district administration continues distributing 280 tonnes of rice, 2,000 packets of dry foods and Tk 6.75 lakh among 2.94 lakh people of 390 affected villages in 55 unions of all nine upazilas in the district.
Gaibandha district administration has allocated 400 tonnes of rice, Taka 6.50 lakh and 2,000 packets of dry foods for distribution among 2.54 lakh flood-affected people of 213 villages in 26 unions of four upazilas in the district.
Nilphamari district administration has so far allocated 170 tonnes of rice, Taka 2.50 lakh and 2,000 packets of and dry foods for distribution among flood-affected people of Dimla upazila, said SA Hayat, DRRO of Nilphamari.
DRRO of Bogura Azhar Ali Mandal said district administration has allocated 142 tonnes of rice and 2,000 packets of dry foods for distribution among 66,800 flood-hit people of 98 villages in 14 unions of three upazilas in the district.
Gaibandh flood control dam collapsed Flood situation in Gaibandha district deteriorated further as the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot registered further rise in last 24 hours till 9:00am due to rush of hilly waters from the upstream and incessant rain.
Fresh areas of the mainland of the district have also been flooded as the flood control embankments collapsed at four points of Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas yesterday morning due to pressure of floodwater of the Brahmaputra and the Ghagot river.
Two portions of flood control embankment at Baguria area under Sadar upazila and Katlamari area under Fulchhari upazila have been washed away yesterday morning due to the pressure of the Brahmaputra river water.

Teesta flowing 15cm below danger mark Water level of the river Teesta at the Nilphamari point is flowing by 15 cm below its danger mark showing an improvement sign as the char areas of the district were badly affected by floodwater.
Executive Engineer of Water Development Board Md Rabiul Islam said, “Water level of the Teesta at Nilphamari point is flowing by 15cm below its danger mark. If water level in the Teesta continues to fall, flood
situation may improve in Nilphamari district.”
Acting Deputy Commissioner Shahinur Alam said, “A total of 150 tonnes of rice, 1500 packets of dry food and Taka two lakh were allocated for Dimla upazila. We have started distribution of these relief materials among the flood-hit people.”
“We have sought 500 tonnes of rice, Taka five lakh and 2,000 packets of dry food for the flood affected people of the district,” he added.
Two lakh people affected in Jamalpur Monsoon flood has affected two lakh people in Jamalpur as water level of the Jamuna river has increased sharply during the past 24 hours.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said 29 unions in Islampur, Madarganj, Dewanganj and Sarishabari upazila were inundated by
floodwater.
Low-lying areas of rest three upazilas Jamalpur Sadar, Melandaha and Bakshiganj were also flooded, they said.
They said 13 flood shelters were also set up for flood-hit people.
Overall flood situation in three upazilas -Kalmakanda, Barhatta and Purbadhala – under Netrakona district further deteriorated today as new fresh areas inundated by the flood waters.
District administration and Water Development Board (WDB) office sources today said, the flood situation worsened further during the last 24 hours due to torrential rainfall and swelling trend of two rivers-Khanso and Ubdakhali which were flowing above danger levels at different points.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Netrakona Ariful Islam said that the flood has so far affected 17,600 families of 217 villages under 21 unions of the five upazilas in the district.
The DC informed that the government has already allocated taka five lakhs in cash and 300 metric tons of rice for the flood affected people of the district.
In Sirajganj, the water level of Jamuna River was flowing 20cm above the danger level this morning, inundating different areas in the district’s Belkuchi, tarash and Sadar upazila, reports our local correspondent.
“In the last two days the water level rose by 20-25 centimetres, while it went up by 32cm since yesterday,” said Md Rafikul Islam, assistant engineer of WDB in Sirajganj.
In Moulvibazar
Water in the Monu river, Dholai river and Kushiyara river has continued to flow above the danger level today.
At Railway Bridge point, the water of Monu River was flowing at 58cm and at Chadni Ghaat point it was flowing at 79cm, which are both above the danger level, our Moulvibazar correspondent reports.
