Seven activists of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal have been detained for trying to form a human chain, demanding the release of its leader Moazzem Hossain Alal.
Police say they were picked up from in front of the National Press Club on Friday morning.
“They were trying to organise a programme there without permission,” Shahbagh police Inspector Habil Hossain said.
Witnesses said Juba Dal’s Mohammadpur unit had gathered in front of
the Press Club when police surrounded them and detained seven.
Minutes later, BNP’s Acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir demanded their release.
Alal, besides 62 others, was detained from his Mohammadpur residence on Oct 25. He has been implicated in a case for allegedly plotting acts of sabotage.
A Dhaka court sent the former MP and five others to three days’ police custody for interrogation the following day.
