Seven idols of Hindu community burnt after unidentified miscreants set fire at Durga-Kali temple at Senerhut of Adhuna village under Sharikal union of Gournadi upazila in Barisal district on early Tuesday.
Satindranath Chakraborty, president of the Senerhut Durga-Kali Mandir management committee, said priest and worshipper left the brick walled -tin-shed temple at about 10:30 pm Monday after completing night worship.
On Tuesday morning when they came for morning worship, found idols of Durga, Sarswati, Laxmi, Kartik, Ganesh, Ashur and Kali burnt fully inside and the tin-shed roof on the temple burnt partly by poring petrol, the temple committee president added.
Then they informed local government representatives and the police station, he told.
Abul Kalam, Gournadi police station officer in charge, said a case lodged by president of the temple committee in this connection without mentioning any name of accused. Police trying to nab the suspected accused.
K M Ehsan Ullah, district police superintendent, Masud Hasan Patwari, upazila nirbahi officer, visited the spot, the OC Gournadi PS told.
Kaliya Daman Guha, upazila president Hindu-Buddha-Christian Oikya Parishad, Dulal Roy Dulu, Manik Lal Acharya, president and secretary, Hindu-Buddha-Christian Kalyan Parishad in separate statements condemning the incident demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and assurances of safety and security for the minority community members, their houses and religious places.
