Sensitization of community focal persons have become crucial to ensure legal rights and protection of persons with disabilities through proper implementation of the Disabled People’s Rights Protection Act-2013.
Leaders of different organisations working with physically challenged people expressed the view at a ‘Disability Sensitization Training Session for Community Focal Person’ held recently at ASOD Training Centre in Rangpur. National Grassroots Disability Organisation (NGDO) and National Council of Disabled Women (NCDW) jointly organised the event for focal persons of the disability-sensitive communities.
Presided over by President of NCDW Nasima Khatun, Program Manager of NGDO Bashir Al Hussaine and Councilor of Work for Life of Rangpur Habibur Rahman Rony conducted the training session.
President of Rangdhanu District Protibondhi Adhikar Sangstha Nur Alam, Councilors of NGDO Aklima Begum and Rabiul Islam and General Secretary of NCDW Shajeda Khatun addressed the event as resource persons. The resource persons discussed the Disabled People’s Rights Protection Act-2013 and its implementation policies to ensure legal rights of the disabled population and their socio-economic and political empowerment for mainstreaming in the society.
They narrated rights of the people of disabilities, classification of disabilities, services being provided by the government to them and selection process of beneficiaries of the disabled people for government benefits and services.
Nur Alam discussed problems and socioeconomic conditions of disabled population, steps taken by the government and other organisations for their inclusion, participation and representation in development activities. Nasima Khatun called upon the participating disabled-sensitive community focal persons to play their due role in ensuring education and training for the disable population to make them productive human resources for attaining the SDGs by 2030.
