The High Court (HC) on Tuesday directed the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) to immediately forward the nomination papers of BNP leader Mirza Abbas to the Returning Officer for scrutiny.
The court also directed the Returning Officer for Dhaka-9 Constituency to complete the scrutiny of the nomination papers within 24 hours.
The HC bench of Justice F R M Nazmul Ahsan and Justice K M Kamrul Kader passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Mirza Abbas challenging the Retuning Officer’s refusal to accept his nomination. Barrister A K M Ehsanur Rahman, a lawyer for Mirza Abbas, told the reporters that his client submitted his nomination to the Returning Officer of Dhaka on November 28, but the Returning Officer did not accept the nomination papers.
Mirza Abbas then submitted the nomination papers to the Election Commission on December 1, but the Election Commission did not send the nomination papers to the Returning Officer for scrutiny, he said.
The BNP leader later filed the writ petition with the High Court seeking its directives to the CEC to forward the nomination to the Returning Officer, he added.
