Department of Sociology, East West University (EWU) organized a seminar on ‘Suicide: Context and Prevention’ on Thursday at the EWU campus, Aftabnagar in the capital.
The speakers of the seminar were Shipra Zaman Joyashree, President, Bright Tomorrow Foundation, Md. Zahidul Islam, Executive Director, Society for Voluntary activities and Dr Anisur Rahman Khan, Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology, EWU. The seminar was chaired by Prof Dr Mohammed Farashuddin, Chief Advisor of EWU and former governor of Bangladesh Bank.
Mohammad Moinuddin Abdullah, former Senior Secretary and Managing Director, PKSF was the special guest of the seminar.
Students, scholars from different universities and NGOs attended the seminar and shared their opinions regarding the prevention of suicide.
The seminar highlighted the crucial points as to why suicide occurs, what are the social factors involved and how that can be prevented.
It was suggested that suicide should be analyzed from the broader social perspectives and must be prevented through multilayered approaches addressing the anomic condition of the society.
