Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh in partnership with Chittagong Independent University (CIU) organised a seminar titled ‘Horizon 2020, from the Lab to the Market, Cooperation on Research and Innovation between EU and Bangladesh’.
The seminar, presided over by Dr Irshad Kamal Khan, Vice-C hancellor (Acting), of Chittagong Independent University (CIU) was held at the Chittagong Club Auditorium on Tuesday.
Zillul Hye Razi, Trade Adviser of Delegation of the European Union, moderated the seminar.
The keynote on “European Union’s Horizon 2020” was presented by Denis Dambois, Regional Counsellor, Research and Innovation, Delegation of the European Union to India. More than 100 research scholars of Chittagong region from different universities, research institutions, business and trade hub attended the seminar. Frederic Maduraud, deputy head of mission, Delegation of the European Union to Bangladesh, said Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU Research and Innovation programme ever with nearly €80 billion of funding available over seven years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private investment that this money will attract. It promises more breakthroughs, discoveries and world-firsts by taking great ideas from the lab to the market.
He also added that Horizon 2020 is the financial instrument implementing the Innovation Union, a Europe 2020 flagship initiative aimed at securing Europe’s global competitiveness. Denis Dambois in his keynote presentation said that Horizon 2020 is the biggest opportunity for the third world countries like Bangladesh. As a potential region, scholars and researchers of Chittagong may get maximum benefit for its geographical location. He elaborated different aspects of submitting research proposals and answered the questions of the participants.
Dr Irshad Kamal Khan, in his address thanked EU for choosing Chittagong Independent University as a partner institution for implementing Horizon 2020 of EU. Khan also stressed the need for successful submission of project proposal after getting an overview of the Horizon 2020 from the Delegation of the European Union.
