Self-reliance on fish soon

Fisheries experts at separate post-rally discussions held at different places in Rangpur division have said Bangladesh would achieve self-reliance on fish soon within tenure of the present government.
They were addressing the discussions arranged by Fisheries Department with assistance of district and upazila administrations at the district and upazila headquarters on Tuesday to observe the weeklong National Fisheries Week-2015 programmes.
The weeklong programmes include colourful rallies, releasing fish fries, discussions, seminars, awareness building and motivational activities with a renewed call and fresh strategies for further developing the prospective fisheries sector.
In Rangpur, a huge rally participated by officials and employees of administrations, Fisheries Department, fishermen, teachers, students, fish farmers, owners of pisciculture farms and hatcheries paraded the city streets carrying banners, placards and festoons.
Later, Additional Divisional Commissioner (General) Kazi Hassan Ahmed attended the main discussion held at Town Hall auditorium in the city as the chief guest with Acting Deputy Commissioner Shahidul Islam in the chair.
Divisional Deputy Director of the Fisheries Department Rakib Uddin Biswas, Project Director of the ‘Fisheries Development Project for Rangpur Division’ Mohammad Nazrul Islam, District Fisheries Officer Dr Zillur Rahman, addressed as special guests.
Office Secretary of district Awami League (AL) Tauhidur Rahman Tutul, senior AL leader Jahangir Alam Bakhsi, hatchery owners, pisciculture extension workers, fish feed traders, fishermen and fish farmers also addressed.
Narrating the tremendous success achieved in increasing fish production, the fisheries experts said that 1.66 lakh tonnes fish was produced last year against annual demand of 2.74 lakh tonnes in Rangpur division alone.
They said the country produced about 35 lakh tonnes fish last year against annual demand of 42 lakh tonnes as its production increases by one lakh tonne annually to achieve self-reliance very soon following various steps taken by the present government.
After achieving self-reliance on rice and turning Bangladesh into a food surplus country, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has put emphasis on meeting nutritional demand of the population by increasing production of fish, meat, milk and eggs, they said.
