The government has launched a project to set up seed production farm in country’s southern coastal region aiming to produce high tolerance seeds for sustainable food production.
“We are going to establish the seed farm in Barisal sadar and Dashmina upazila under Patuakhali district to produce high salinity, drought and water-logging tolerance seeds to cope with the adverse impact of climate change,” said Planning Minister A H M Mustafa Kamal.
He said the initiative has been taken to continue the self-sufficiency in food grains production that the country has attained due to the time-befitting and innovative measures taken by the Awami League led government.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) is entrusted to implement the project involving Taka 213 crore by June 2017, as the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has already cleared the project.
Under the project, nearly 5,100 metric tons of foundation seeds would be produced from the breeder seeds of rice, wheat, maize, potato, jute, pulse and oil seeds which would also be processed, examined and preserved in the farm.
Besides, breeder seeds of those crops would be collected from different research organizations as well as training would be given to develop skilled manpower.
Officials concerned said once upon a time Barisal was known as the “grain house” of Bangla. But, different types of natural calamities such as flood, drought, waterlogging and intensified salinity has diminished the fertility of soil, resulting the region has become less productive.
Considering the aspects, it is now inevitable to bring back the prosperity of food grains production in the southwestern region as well as ensure high salinity durable seeds of different types of crop that is why the decision of setting up seed farm has been taken.
