Security beefed up for foreigners in Sylhet

The UN Development Programme (UNDP) along with police and other law enforcing agencies have stepped up measures to reinforce security of visitors, especially foreigners, in Sylhet District in the wake of recent killings of two foreigners in the country.
UNDP which is involved in a number of development projects in the Sylhet districts has its own security arrangement. But it coordinates with police and others to ensure safety of all foreigners in the forest and hill region. “Security of the foreigners has been given highest priority in the current situation,” Deputy Police Commissiner Rahmot Ulla said.

The police headquarters has issued directives to the law enforcing units concerned to see that foreigners’ security is ensured, especially in the aftermath of the murders of an Italian and a Japanese citizen over the past week, He said.
DIG of Sylhet Mizanur Rahman told that all foreign nationals working in this area were safe.
“Law enforcing agencies are providing all assistance to ensure security of all foreigners in the Sylhet,” he said.
ASP Suggan Chakma said as per direction they have strengthened police patrolling and other necessary steps that the foreigners may live without fear.
He said the respective countries have also told their citizens to avoid risky places and maintain their personal security.
16 Jamaat-Shibir men held
Habigonj Police in separate drives arrested 16 leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and its student body Islami Chhatra Shibir from different parts of the district early Monday.
Additional police super Md Shahidul Islam said, a team led by him, conducted the drives in Bahubal, Lakhai, Nabiganj and Shayestaganj upazilas and arrested six leaders and activists.
The detained men are–Nabiganj upazila unit Jamaat ameer Maulana Ashraf Ali, 40, Lakhai upazila unit Jamaat secretary Nurul Amin, 42, Sayestaganj upazila unit Jamaat secretary Yeasin Khan, 32, Sayestaganj upazila unit Shibir president Hossain Ahmed, 22, its secretary Nizam Uddin, 18, and Shibir activit Haque Kayes, 27.
Police also recovered five cocktails, crude bomb-making materials, some anti-government leaflets, jihadi books, one motorcycle and six mobile phone sets from their possessions.
Another police team raided at ‘Kashful’ hotel in Sayestaganj municipality area around 3am and detained 10 Jamaat and Shibir men.
43 bottles of wine seized
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive seized a total of 43 bottles of Indian wine from Campaniganj upazila under Sylhet district early Sunday.
Sources concerned said acting on a tip-off, BGB members conducted a drive in Utma Border area of the upazila around 5:30am and seized 43 bottles of Indian Official’s Choice wine from an abandoned condition worth around Tk 64,000.
